Mike Huckabee’s Political Career R.I.P.

Monday, November 30th, 2009

The tragic murder of four Seattle-area police officers didn’t have to happen. The man who allegedly committed this horrendous act should have been serving at least 95 years in prison in Arkansas. But then-Gov. Mike Huckabee commuted his sentence.

In 1990, Clemmons, then 18, was sentenced in Arkansas to 60 years in prison for burglary and theft of property, according to a news account in Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

. . .

When Clemmons received the 60-year sentence, he was already serving 48 years on five felony convictions and facing up to 95 more years on charges of robbery, theft of property and possessing a handgun on school property. Records from Clemmons’ sentencing described him as 5-foot-7 and 108 pounds. The crimes were committed when he was 17.

Clemmons served 11 years before being released.

News accounts say Huckabee commuted Clemmons’ sentence, citing Clemmons’ young age at the time the crimes were committed.

Clemmons is not the first felon pardoned by Huckabee to go on to do such evil acts. Just Google Wayne DuMond for more. Here’s a little video that we put together here at Virtucon just about 2 years ago citing Huckabee’s lack of judgment in issuing these pardons, which led us to coin the name “Mike Dukakabee” (h/t Pedro’s Dwarf) given the similarities between former MA Gov. Mike Dukakis and Mike Huckabee.

It seems that Huckabee tends to believe the best about people, perhaps from his time as a Baptist minister. But there is apparently a pattern of such cases of poor judgment.

According to good old Huck, the fault still lies elsewhere, presumably with that nebulous “system.” How could anyone believe that he would let a vicious killer and rapist walk free? It is all too believable, if only because Huckabee continued to exercise his powers of clemency and commutation just as foolishly and frivolously for years after he should have learned better from the DuMond mistake. He bestowed those favors on prisoners he happened to meet, on prisoners with personal connections to him or his family, and especially on prisoners recommended to him by pastors whom he happened to know from his own previous career as a Baptist minister and denominational leader. As with DuMond, whose case was pleaded by a preacher named Jay Cole, prisoners guilty of heinous crimes could be washed clean in Huckabee’s estimation if a pastor of his acquaintance importuned him. Among the thugs to whom he granted clemency was a robber who had beaten a man to death with a lead pipe.

I have no tolerance whatsoever for anyone — Republican or Democrat; federal, state or local — who lets a criminal walk free with the likelihood that they will commit a violent crime.  What Huckabee did during his career as Gov. of Arkansas is unforgivable.

RLC of VA Endorses Hunt for Senate

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Republican Liberty Caucus of Virginia Endorses Steve Hunt in the 37th State Senate Special Election
Hunt is the liberty minded choice in the Special Election to fill Ken
Cuccinelli’s seat.

Centreville, Va.–Members of the Republican Liberty Caucus of Virginia have endorsed Steve Hunt in the Republican firehouse primary, which will be taking place on December 1, 2009 at Centreville High School from 6-10 p.m.   This is to fill the open seat that was previously held by Ken Cuccinelli.  Hunt is the only Republican candidate, who will fight for the principles of limited government and lower taxes.

Republican Liberty Caucus of Virginia Chairman Matthew Gagnon said, ”Ken Cuccinelli was an important advocate for liberty in the Virginia Senate, and it is vitally important that his replacement continue to champion those same values–specifically limited government, free enterprise, low taxes and personal freedom.  Steve Hunt is such a person, and the Republican Liberty Caucus of Virginia strongly believes in his candidacy.  We enthusiastically endorse Mr. Hunt, and will work hard to see him elected.”

The Republican Liberty Caucus of Virginia was chartered in 2007 and has worked tirelessly throughout the Commonwealth to promote the principles of individual liberty, personal responsibility, and limited government within the Republican Party.

The following article was pulled from Scholars & Rogues RSS Feed

Results: When you saw that two legendary bands were going head to head you probably expected a slugfest. Hopefully you weren’t disappointed by what proved to be the tightest match we’ve seen. In the end, Pink Floyd nudged ahead for an extremely narrow win. The numbers: #2 Pink Floyd 52%; #1 Led Zeppelin 48%. Floyd is into the Final Four.

Up next, our search for the greatest band of all time takes you to the Budokan regional final. Do The Police have one more (really huge) upset left in them? We’ll soon find out.

Game over? Billionaire elites now blatantly rule American politics

Monday, November 30th, 2009

The following article was pulled from Scholars & Rogues RSS Feed

What drives a man or a woman to spend millions of dollars — even tens of millions — of his or her own money to get a job that would place the words senator, representative, governor, or mayor in front of his or her name? For most of us unwashed heathens, the multiple millions of their own money these financial elites spend on their political campaigns represent seemingly staggering amounts.

But viewed in the rarified context of the very wealthy, the amounts are petty cash.

For example, former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman has put $19 million so far into her campaign for governor of California — but that’s barely 1.5 percent of her $1.3 billion fortune.

Whitman has “publicly floated the notion of a record-shattering $150-million campaign budget” — but even if she financed $100 million of that herself, that still would only be 7.7 percent of her billion-dollar-plus wallet. (more…)

Christmas Music (4)–Best Christmas album by an American medieval babe group

Monday, November 30th, 2009

The following article was pulled from Scholars & Rogues RSS Feed

This would be Anonymous 4, not only the best, but perhaps the only American Medieval Babe group. I used to go hear them at the lunchtime concert series at Trinity Church in lower Manhattan in the 1980s, before they got famous and sold something like a gazillion albums of what is basically 14th century chant. Good for them. They called it a day back in 2004, but you know how these things go—they still tour occasionally—check out the website. Anyway, the problem here is which one?

They’ve done four Christmas albums (including the most recent one, discussed below)—the chant ones are On Yoolis Night, Legends of Saint Nicholas, and The Star in the East, which is a bunch of 14th century Hungarian chants. My slight preference is for the third one, because it has a little bit of an eastern edge, but they’re all wonderful. Anonymous 4 was a real person, by the way–musicologists actually know who some of the different “Anonymous” personages were–they just don’t know their names. There’s even some suggestion that Anonymous 4 was a woman. And there were certainly women composers back then, Hildegarde von Bingen for one. This was before the church decided women needed to be relegated somewhere out of sight, though. (more…)

It’s getting harder to keep up with this

Monday, November 30th, 2009

The scientific and academic communities (the real ones, not the political hothouses) are coming to grips with the reality of Climategate.

Eduardo Zorita – hardly a skeptic on “global warming” – has called for his tainted fellows to be banned from future input, knowing full well the consequences of his call (via Daily Telegraph, UK):

By writing these lines I will just probably achieve that a few of my future studies will, again, not see the light of publication.

Meanwhile, Professor Michael Mann (he of the “Nature Trick”) is under investigation from his own university – Penn State (Climate Change Examiner).  This could be the worst thing to hit Happy Valley since the 1994 national championship freeze-out.

Of course, the political left is still pretending this doesn’t exist.  Check out the “heated debate” among “experts” in the Guardian, led by none other than James Hansen.  As of this morning, the number of times Climategate is mentioned stands at zero (h/t Greg Pollowitz at Planet Gore).  You’d think someone would at least talk to George Monbiot about it – or did he blackball himself already?

Latest Climategate update

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Well now, it appears Climategate has circled the world, and is now showing up on multiple fronts.

In London, some are wondering why the BBC sat on the “emails” (and the computer codes, and the Harry-Read-Me file) for over a month (Daily Mail, UK).

Speaking of the Harry-Read-Me file (about which I’ll admit to being lax in mentioning, as it just seemed too good to be true – but we’re more than a week in and it remains unrefuted), Lorrie Goldstein (Toronto Sun) has the best synopsis this side of Kate McMillan.  Of course, Kate reminds us (again) why there is no one compared to her on this.

Missing in action is . . . American MSM!  The folks at Planet Gore have the details on the part-blackout, part-whitewash (the first link is particularly instructive regarding the New York Times).
