Miss Beer Cart 2009

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Gee, I’ll be going to Wisconsin next week but will miss watching the qualifying for Miss Beer Cart. A competition featuring driving a golf cart through an obstacle course, mixing bloody marys, and other “talents”? Why can’t ABC put this on television instead of Wipeout?

Senator Claire McCaskill tweets to weaken ACES

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

The following article was pulled from Scholars & Rogues RSS Feed

Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri is calling for a further weakening of the American Climate and Energy Security Act (ACES) that passed out of the House last week. Of course, that’s not what she calls it. Sen. McCaskill twittered last week:

I hope we can fix cap and trade so it doesn’t unfairly punish businesses and families in coal dependent states like Missouri. (emphasis mine)

I can’t help but wonder what happened to the Senator who dared mention that oil prices shouldn’t be allowed to fall too far at the Rocky Mountain Roundtable, Session 2, Part 3, during the DNC:

There’s a certain reality here that it is important that we don’t get gas too cheap again, and I certainly agree with what [Randy Udall] said. We will never see the days of… when people are pumping $1, $1.50 gas again. And that may not be an all bad thing because it will motivate the politics on this issue to the forefront so we have a sense of urgency.

Sarah Palin Featured in Runners’ World

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

I admit a subscription to Runner’s World doesn’t seem like a bad idea…and I don’t run.

Palin Does Runner’s World Photo Shoot”

UPDATE: I suspect Runner’s World will have one of its best traffic days ever with the Palin photoshoot. And being a member of the “respectable” media, I suspect the magazine will never admit it.

On flower pots and libraries

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

by Jennifer Angliss

My city, like many other municipalities these days, has a bit of a budget crunch. Expenses exceed income and so cuts must be made. One of the first things my city cut was the flower pots that decorate major intersections in the summers. To me, that seems like a reasonable cut. Yes, the flowers are beautiful. But they cost $20,000 per year (including water and labor costs). And at the same time, our library is struggling with its budget and has a hiring freeze, even with several open positions. In my opinion, if you’ve got an underfunded library it’s not wise to spend taxpayer money on flowers.

In the end, the Rotary Club took up the cause and donated money for the planters. Wonderful, I say. We get to keep the flowers without spending very much city money on them. They are still watered and tended by city workers who have been reassigned from jobs like weeding and picking up litter, but the bulk of the expense has been shouldered by the Rotary Club and private citizens.

However, (you knew there was a however coming, right?) I am a bit concerned about the attitudes of my fellow citizens on this. (more…)

Mr. Smalley Goes To Washington

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Failed talk radio show host Al Franken of the failed Air America liberal radio network that he joined after his failed Stuart Smalley movie (it was in theaters for only half a day before it was pulled due to no one attending anywhere) has finally succeeded at something.  He will be the new U.S. Senator from the deranged state of Minnesota.

Business: Trapped in meeting hell? Three things to think about

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

The following article was pulled from Scholars & Rogues RSS Feed

Hate meetings? Who doesn’t?

If you’ve snooped around at all, you know that there are lots and lots of smart people with good advice on how to run effective meetings, but you may be thinking that none of those suggestions is really helping address what seem like deeper issues (and here, think “band-aid” and “sucking chest wound”). If so, let’s ponder the possibility that the problem lies not with the conduct of the meetings themselves, but with the culture in which they occur. Consider the following issues that I’ve encountered in various organizations through the years.

Why The Need To Constantly Attack Sarah Palin?

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Todd Purdum has the latest liberal hit-piece on AK Gov. Sarah Palin in the new issue of Vanity Fair magazine (honestly, I had no idea they were even still publishing — who buys that anyway?)

Tom Bevan at RealClearPolitics disassembles the article well with just one paragraph.

Even more perplexing is the MSM’s continuing fascination with, and seemingly instiatible desire to destroy Sarah Palin. Why are Todd Purdum and Vanity Fair pulling out all the stops for a piece on Palin 10 months after the election? Is it because they fear she’s still viable as a national political figure, or simply that a 9,800 word hit job on Palin is the kind of delicious red meat VF’s readers can’t resist?

Probably a bit of both, I would think.

Bill Kristol over at The Weekly Standard takes a different tactic and begins pointing fingers at the “GOP Hacks” who supply the fodder for such articles.

Meanwhile, on the day Purdum’s piece hit the web (today), a journalist who had expressed suspicions in the past that elements of the McCain campaign had undercut Palin suddenly got a friendly e-mail from top McCain-Palin campaign strategist Steve Schmidt. This journalist hadn’t heard from Schmidt in months. Perhaps Steve was nervous someone would finger him for the Purdum piece. One reason people might do so is this passage in Purdum’s article: “All the while, Palin was coping not only with the crazed life of any national candidate on the road but also with the young children traveling with her. Some top aides worried about her mental state: was it possible that she was experiencing postpartum depression? (Palin’s youngest son was less than six months old.)” In fact, one aide who raised this possibility in the course of trashing Palin’s mental state to others in the McCain-Palin campaign was Steve Schmidt.

Can’t we just once and for all put all these senior McCain staffers out to pasture?

PWC News & Messenger Supports Lopez’s Call For Debates

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

The PWC News & Messenger has run an editorial calling for Pastor Luke Torian to accept the proposal of former Dumfries Town Councilman Rafael Lopez to engage in 10 debates leading up to the Nov. 3 election when the two will face-off to be the next Delegate to represent the 52nd Dist.

Lopez has much to offer and is laying out a detailed campaign platform centered around improving the quality of life for the people in the 52nd Dist. which runs along U.S. Route 1 in Prince William Co.  Lopez has taken to calling it “America’s Main Street” and is offering solutions on how to improve traffic, encourage economic development, provide quality education and ensure public safety.  His past experience in elected office will serve him well as he works to bring these issues to the forefront, both now during the campaign and once he is representing us in Richmond.
