We Have Seen The Light

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Despite disagreeing with John McCain 50 percent of the time over the course of his congressional career, we supported him last November in the race again Barack Obama.

We were wrong to do so.

These difficult economic times have cause us to see the light.  Over the past few days, the staff here at Virginia Virtucon have been meeting to discuss the path that we should take in the future.  The one thing that we all were surprised by was our quick agreement.

No longer will we go by the name Virginia Virtucon.  Today, we relaunch as Virginia Obamicon in tribute to the brilliant leadership being exhibited by our Commander In Chief.  Between his decision to go forward with a surge in Afghanistan and his deft handling of the crisis facing America’s automobile industry, we can no longer withhold our support from our President.  Of course we will have some disagreements with him, but we find ourselves more in agreement with him than we had thought we’d be.

Please bear with us as we transition this blog from Virtucon to Obamicon.  Over the next few days we will be changing our story categories and various side-banner images to reflect the new orientation.

And remember –

YES WE CAN!

NY-20 Special Election Heading For Overtime

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

The special election for New York’s 20th Cong. Dist. looks to be heading for overtime.  Democrat Scott Murphy holds a 65 vote lead over Republican Jim Tedisco for the seat vacated by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand with all precincts reporting.

That being said, we’re looking at not only a recount, but to absentee votes to decide this race.  There are approx. 6,000 absentee ballots and emergency paper ballots awaiting counting, which have been impounded by court order until at least Monday, and the New York State Board of Elections extended the deadline for Military and Overseas ballots until April 13th (they must be postmarked by March 30th.)

We won’t know the winner of this race for about 3 weeks, folks.  If I had to make a prediction at this point, I’d say that Tedisco prevails on account of the absentees.

All that being said, this race should never have been this close.  Tedisco entered the race with a 20 point lead, which was promptly squandered by the buffoon ad agency that the NRCC handed him.  According to family and friends on the ground up there, they were some of the worst ads they’d seen.  Fortunately, a few weeks ago Tedisco fired them and hired a local agency that started producing ads that resonated with the voters in the area.

  • **NOTE TO NRCC STAFF — IN ALL FUTURE RACES USE LOCAL TALENT, NOT D.C. AD AGENCIES THAT ARE UNFAMILIAR WITH THE TARGET AUDIENCE.***

To paraphrase what I saw someone say in a video once, “A monkey with an ‘R’ stapled to its forehead could have run a better ad campaign in this race!”

Howard Kurtz’s Octomom hypocrisy: He was against exploiting it for ratings before he was for it

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Washington Post and CNN media critic Howard Kurtz dedicated an entire segment of this past Sunday’s Reliable Sources cable program to a gratuitous pie fight between two players involved in Nadya “Octomom” Suleman’s never-ending nationally televised freak show. But a little over a month ago, Kurtz decried the media for exploiting the octuplet mother for ratings and for doing so under the false pretense that concern for her babies’ well being drove their round-the-clock coverage.

What a difference a few weeks make.

TunesDay: Name those bands - and the winner is….

bandssamlovesThe results of last week’s Name Those Bands contest are in. In first place we have … a disqualification, sorta. Our friend Ubertramp logged in with an impressive 47 of 53. Seriously, that’s pretty damned good. But he has disqualified himself because I’m the one who turned him onto most of these outstanding artists and he felt like he might as well be cheating under the circumstances.

Wow - sportsmanship. What a concept.

So our next highest scorer, and the official winner, is … (more…)

Tunesday - Traditional Arabic Music

Tarab is a state of ecstasy and surrender one enters while listening, with Body and Soul, to music. Whether it’s the dancing strings of the oud, the weeping melody of the violin, the mystical call of the nay or the pulsating rhythm of the drums…

A few years ago I decided to try my hand at learning some of the folkloric dances of the Middle East. I had no idea what a fascinating journey lay ahead. As much as I study the dance steps, they are incomplete without appreciating the music. So to help me share this wonderful music with you I asked local musician Erik Brown to join us for an on-line interview. Erik plays the Tablah (drum) for the Seattle based group House of Tarab.

Dawn: Erik, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts on Arabic music. Tell us a little about the House of Tarab.

Erik: The House of Tarab, or H.O.T. for short, was officially formed in 2006. The six members are Stephen Elaimy, Jane Hall, David Mcgrath, Sallah Ali, Andy Zadrozny and myself. Members of this group have been playing traditional Arabic music together for more than a decade.

The House of Tarab is considered to be a “takht,” or orchestra. Takht also refers generally to the arrangement of instruments and to some degree the style of music performed. In a very broad sense a takht usually perform classical Arabic music or Muwashahat (lyric poetry).

Vindication for the Doomsayers

Sometimes it’s good to go back and see who had it right.  Poor Peter Schiff came out again and again on Fox to sound the alarm bell that we borrowed too much to sink into shoddy morgages - and was laughed off every time. If only the nation listened to him 2-3 years ago. Click here to view the embedded video.
