Anyone living and/or working in the Washington, D.C./Northern Virginia area on 9/11/01 has a story to tell. Recently, I heard the story of a cab driver who saw the plane hit the Pentagon in his rearview mirror. He is an older African-American gentleman who grew up in Queens, NY and was, as he put it to me, reflexively a liberal Democrat. That one moment changed his life. He began paying attention to politics and really listening to what the two parties were saying. To his amazement, he discovered that once he started thinking about it, he was a conservative Republican. As I exited his cab, I encouraged him to run for office himself some day.
